The 540it accelerates very quickly for a sporting wagon, covering 0-60 mph in just over 6.0 seconds with the automatic / sport shift transmission. With its tremendous torque, this engine does give the 540i a significant advantage in sporting appeal versus the BMW 528i. The 5 Series BMWs offer superb handling and reacts crisply to steering inputs and is a pleasure to drive under any conditions / roads. The steering is precise and tight and there are absolutely no vibrations or problems with the car at any speed. The cars brakes stop the BMW straight and sure and the emergency brake is full functional.
The front airbags are controlled by a dual-mode system that changes the deployment speed of the airbag depending on whether occupants are wearing seat belts; the front-passenger airbags will not inflate if that seat is unoccupied. The 5 Series cars come standard with side airbags in front. Also, a Head Protection System is supplied. Also has traction control and anti-lock brakes, Dynamic Stability Control (computer-controlled system that uses inputs from a variety of onboard sensors to selectively apply braking force and reduce power to individual wheels to counteract skids), and Dynamic Brake Control (reinforces the driver's pedal effort in emergency braking situations.
